\"\"4MyCiTy<\/a> is a Maryland-based non-profit that’s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0revolutionizing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the way people view\u00a0<\/span><\/span>f<\/span><\/span>ood\u00a0<\/span><\/span>w<\/span><\/span>aste and reduc<\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0negative effects\u00a0<\/span><\/span>it has on<\/span><\/span>\u00a0our planet<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the wake of\u00a0<\/span>COVID<\/span>-19,\u00a0<\/span>one in six Americans face food insecurity<\/span>. That\u2019s up<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>46%<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>from before the pandemic<\/span>\u00a0and a<\/span>ccording\u00a0<\/span>to Feeding America<\/span>, that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>includes as many as\u00a0<\/span>18 million kids<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The pandemic has altered life all around us and has revealed how fragile our food system is today<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>At Gotham Greens, <\/span>our mission<\/a> has always been to transform how and where fresh produce is grown<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Now more than ever, we are committed\u00a0<\/span>to providing<\/span>\u00a0nourishing produce to people when it\u2019s needed most<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Since\u00a0<\/span>early March<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Gotham Greens\u00a0<\/span>has<\/span> provided over 200,000 lbs. of <\/span>produce to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>non-profit<\/span>s, community leaders and\u00a0<\/span>food banks. \"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Our<\/span>\u00a0friends at\u00a0<\/span>4MyCiTy<\/span>,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>a Maryland based non-profit, are <\/span>focus<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0on<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>revolutionizing<\/span>\u00a0the way people view\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>ood\u00a0<\/span>w<\/span>aste<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Food distribution<\/span>\u00a0and community\u00a0<\/span>service<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>at the forefront\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>4MyCiTy\u2019s<\/span> mission. G<\/span>iven the\u00a0<\/span>recent\u00a0<\/span>spike in need<\/span>, founder<\/span> & CEO <\/span>Chris\u00a0<\/span>Dipnarine\u00a0<\/span>has drastically\u00a0<\/span>scaled up<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>his operations (which is 100% run by volunteers!)<\/span>\u00a0In\u00a0<\/span>July alone,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>4MyCiTy<\/span>\u00a0distributed 7.5 million pounds of food<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>their<\/span>\u00a0local<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>When\u00a0<\/span>they\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0not out\u00a0<\/span>moving pallets of food and driving trucks to community food pantries,<\/span>\u00a0Chris and his team\u00a0<\/span>can be found\u00a0<\/span>educat<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>their<\/span> community on the importance of reducing food waste at various <\/span>stages along the supply chain<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Can you tell us a little about\u00a0<\/span><\/b>4MyCiTy<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Chris:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>We are a four-phase sustainability program (hence the \u201c4<\/span>\u201d)<\/span>\u00a0focused on food waste reduction, and redistributing the extra to the commun<\/span>ity. Phase 1 is educating companies, organizations and communities about food waste. Phase 2 is taking any extra food we can recover, and redistributing to families in <\/span>need. Phase 3 is our line of fully biodegradable products that we distribute to reduce plastic waste in our communities. And phase 4 is focused on\u00a0<\/span>composting<\/span>. Anything\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>we cannot distribute to farms or\u00a0<\/span>families<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>we take to compost sites<\/span>\u00a0to turn it back into the soil.<\/span><\/p>\n

How did you get started and what inspired you to begin this project?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Chris:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Food waste is something I\u2019ve studied for a long time. A friend of\u00a0<\/span>mi<\/span>ne,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Matt Burke,<\/span>\u00a0ra<\/span>n a program called\u00a0<\/span>F<\/span>ood\u00a0<\/span>R<\/span>escue\u00a0<\/span>B<\/span>altimore<\/span><\/a>. He\u2019s been in it for about 8 years and we\u2019ve gone back and forth in that time<\/span>\u00a0on what food waste is, and its reduction. I probably talked his ear off. About 2 years ago I decided to launch\u00a0<\/span>4MyCiTy<\/span>, with a larger scope. I wanted to create a more detailed program about food waste with an educational platform t<\/span>o educate businesses. That\u2019s where I saw the lack of involvement \u2013 from the manufacturing side. As time progressed, we started seeing more need. The more food we rescued, the more demand\u00a0<\/span>we had<\/span>. We<\/span>\u00a0thought, how do we shift from the educational side, and more to the distribution side?<\/span> \"\"<\/p>\n

How have things shifted since COVID-19 hit in mid-March?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Chris:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>When COVID-19 hit, everything really skyrocketed. Families were out of work, and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>there were<\/span> businesses that had to get rid of food. We reached out to hotels, distributors and food organizations and began partnering with them. We were lucky to get partnered with the USDA Farm Box Program. That helped us connect with more producers and organizations \u2013 like Gotham Greens who reached out to me on Instagram wanting to share their product with us. It\u2019s been a long journey and we\u2019re constantly looking for ways to get better and reach more people.\"\" <\/span><\/p>\n

Tell us about your ties to Baltimore and Maryland.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Chris:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>I grew up in the Caribbean and moved here in 1998 from Trinidad and Tobago. Baltimore has been my home ever since. I\u2019ve seen Baltimore in the good times, and the bad times. It\u2019s a great city that is very diverse. When I moved here in 1998, the city was very welcoming to me and I\u2019ve been able to have successful businesses here, and in the Parkside Communities (one of the largest, but also most impoverished areas). When I launched <\/span>4MyCiTy<\/span>, my goal was to put healthy food in the hands of people. That\u2019s been our Achilles heel as a community\u2013 access to healthy foods. There is a big price difference between healthy food, and fast\/processed food. When you\u2019re able to put fruits and vegetables into communities that have struggled with access, it\u2019s a great feeling. I think we\u2019re changing the pendulum on access to food, and people\u2019s view on eating and living healthier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What does a typical day look like for you and your volunteers?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Chris:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>A typical day is nonstop. We start distribution at 8AM and usually go to about 4-5PM. Our food rescue operations run 24\/7. We\u2019re always on call if a distributor, hotel or anyone has food for us to pick up \u2013 it\u2019s a constant search. Our team<\/span>\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>loading trucks every day, and while they work, I drive my truck around picking up bread, milk, cheese \u2013 whatever it is we can get. During COVID it\u2019s been nonstop, every day. It\u2019s been a grind, but when you see smiling faces and families with food in their hands, it\u2019s rewarding.\u00a0<\/span> \"\"<\/p>\n

On the flip side, when you see sites with long lines, we get more energized to\u00a0<\/span>go back out<\/span>\u00a0and hunt for ways to reduce food waste<\/span>. To me, it\u2019s a grind but it\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>100%\u00a0<\/span>worth it esp<\/span>e<\/span>cially knowing we\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0giving<\/span>\u00a0them a health<\/span>ier<\/span> lifestyle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What have you learned in the past few months of operating?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Chris:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>I think the biggest thing is really community involvement, and love \u2013 the response and the positivity. Last month we delivered 7.5 million pounds of food, and all of it was\u00a0<\/span>accomplished because of<\/span>\u00a0the hard work of volunteers. Everything is 100% volunteers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When you\u00a0<\/span>think pandemic, you think people won\u2019t want to support or come together. That\u2019s been the biggest surprise, we have over\u00a0<\/span>3<\/span>00 organizations\u00a0<\/span>that partner<\/span>\u00a0with us<\/span>\u00a0and every single one brings volunteers. T<\/span>h<\/span>ey bring food, cake, and it\u2019s an\u00a0<\/span>enjoyable<\/span>\u00a0atmosphere with music and smiles.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a lot of hard work \u2013 these guys show up from 6-7AM to help us unload trucks. Then they go back into their communities to give out 800-900 boxes of food with their own vehicles, money and resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s been the biggest surprise, seeing how well everyone came together to really support our cause and make this thing happen. It\u2019s been rewarding to see how much people really care about their fellow neighbors.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What has been the most gratifying result of your work?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Chris:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>The ability to provide food and resources for people. To get people more excited about living a healthier lifestyle. With fresh fruits and vegetables, people are excited for it! People want it. The number one thing you always hear is cost \u2013 eating\u00a0<\/span>healthy costs a lot of money,<\/span> and it shouldn\u2019t. From the amount of food wasted, it\u2019s a lot that can be diverted. For us to be able to divert 50 million pounds of food in the last couple of months has been a huge inspiration to me. The sky\u2019s the limit for us. Our goal is to continue growing the initiative: look for a bigger space, work with more organizations, grow our reach within the communities to provide a healthier lifestyle for our food insecure neighbors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are your goals for\u00a0<\/span><\/b>4MyCiTy<\/span><\/b>? \"\"<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Chris:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Reduce food waste and end hunger \u2013 that\u2019s the bottom line. But we do want to grow to different cities and empower more people to do what we\u2019re doing. We want to teach people and empower other org<\/span>anizations to start a program like ours. The goal for us is really to boost the level of education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How can people help the Baltimore community, and support your work?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Chris:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Help\u00a0<\/span>connect us<\/span>\u00a0with resources \u2013 that\u2019s the easiest way to help us grow<\/span>. Gotham Greens found us on social media from a post we shared! The more people share<\/span>\u00a0our name<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>we may<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>be able to reach more distributors and organizations that are willing to donate. Food is our biggest need. The more we can rescue the more we can divert.<\/span>\u00a0If you know farms,\u00a0<\/span>distributors<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>restaurants<\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>any<\/span>one<\/span> that could donate, help reach out on our behalf!<\/span><\/p>\n

And donate. We are 100% volunteer run, but a lot of our expenses are operational: forklifts, trucks, gas, supplies and PPE. That\u2019s where your donations go. Every dime goes back into\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>operation. \"\"<\/span><\/p>\n
